Where's Waldo? In DEATH BATTLE!
Where’s Waldo? In DEATH BATTLE!
Heya! This has been a long term project of mine that has been in the oven for a tad too long admittedly since this was originally for a Waldo vs Carmen blog, but that never took off unfortunately. If you’ve known me, you’ll likely know me for being the Waldo researcher, so at last I’ve decided to compile my findings onto one digestible blog.
For the sake of this post, Waldo will be composited across all his media, including the 2019 Hulu version which very blatantly is a completely different character from the OG. As such, the following media will be used:
- The 6 Where’s Waldo? books by Martin Handford.
- The Where's Wally? cartoon (1991)
- Including it’s 4 straight to DVD episodes
- The Where’s Waldo? cartoon (2019)
- NES Where’s Waldo?
- Wii/3DS Where’s Waldo?
- Where’s Waldo? computer games
- Wally Wo Sagase? (Both the arcade game and puzzle rpg)
- Note, the latter game is 3 hours long and has no English translation, so I had to machine translate a lot of text boxes without much understanding
- Official advertisements
- Interviews with Martin Handford
Do keep in mind that many educational themed books of the franchise aren’t documented online, so those weren’t able to be researched. Regardless, it’s time to get searching!
Background
“Where’s Waldo?”
The world is a beautiful place filled with immaculate sights, uniqueness and to simply put it, weirdness to behold. And no other place stacks up in the last regard than other than the Land of Waldos, where only striped wearing dorky people live. But among them, one would decide to travel the world and see the entire world for himself, that one being called Waldo Waldini.
Raised by Mama Waldini, Waldo obtained a great likeness and understanding of many educational subjects, which would eventually develop a joy to explore the world culminating in a never ending hike around the world with his bestest of pals Wenda, Woof and Wizard Whitebeard while the nefarious Odlaw would pursue Waldo’s magic walking stick. Through their journey, Waldo would find all of Wizard Whitebeard’s lost scrolls, visit Hollywood, and even travel through historical ages all across the globe. Even to this day, Waldo and his trusty friends would continue hiking the world in search of wonders...
However, in other reimaginings, Waldo is a teenager that formed part of the Worldwide Wanderer’s Society alongside Wenda and Wizard Whitebeard, searching throughout the whole globe for all the missing wanderer magic keys from the… honestly just childishly petty Odlulu and her pet ferret Fritz, while learning, solving problems, and protecting both the natural and human monuments of the world.
Arsenal
Magic Walking Stick
While it might seem as a normal cane at first hand, Waldo’s walking stick is a magical gift by Wizard Whitebeard. It’s main purpose is to create portals to wherever the user wants to without any established limits as it’s been used to travel into outer space and even the real world. Waldo should have two of these at his disposal after his own creator, Martin Handford, created an exact replica after it got stolen. It’s also shown other abilities such as:
- Sentience.
- Flying.
- Shapeshifting (works as a power drill, an umbrella, a pogo stick, a pointing arrow, a spring, a baseball bat, a boat’s propeller).
- Glowing.
- Growing.
- Time travel.
- Stretching.
- Track objectives.
- Immersion (has teleported dozens of Waldo Watchers inside a book just by wiggling it).
- Turn an entire village into Waldos.
- Machine translations either translate the text incorrectly or the game doesn’t explain, so it’s impossible to tell whether these are people being actually transformed into Waldo or are simply an illusion.
Bottomless Hat
Despite its small appearance, Waldo’s hat is actually bottomless and very stretchy, meaning that it can be used as a glider in the air and can carry as many objects as Waldo wants with no clear limit. He even keeps dozens of spares at hand. At its peak, Waldo attempted to fit two mountain sized trolls, although his plan was foiled before he could successfully perform it. This is also where he keeps all his items, keys, and magic suitcase. Speaking of which…
Magic Suitcase
To travel the world and obtain each Wanderer key, Waldo and Wenda use this magic suitcase to travel to locations around the entire world by entering in. It shrinks down to pocket size for easier carriage.
Wanderer Magic Keys
In the 2019 series, Waldo and friends need to obtain all magical Wanderer Keys scattered all around the world from the petty Odlulu. Most keys fire a straight blast of energy that causes its ability. The many keys are, breathes in:
- Unfreeze key: Turns inanimate statues to life, although it can also turn anything into stone. The statues brought to life aren’t controlled by the user of the key, and it gives them the capabilities of the statue they represent.
- Teeny-Tiny key: Shrinks objects to a much smaller size. At its maximum capacity, it has shrunk the Eiffel Tower down to human height. It can undo all its shrinked objects by clicking it.
- Dubling key: Duplicates objects and living beings. It can undo its effects by clicking its jewel and blasting the duplicated thing.
- Pepper key: Creates a storm that makes spicy peppers fall from the sky.
- Wave key: Controls the waves. It was described to be capable of controlling oceans, which while does come from the hyperbolic Wizard Whitebeard, the key is called one of the most powerful ones and both he and Wizard Waveybeard clearly are worried about it, so the statement does have a foot to stand on.
- Donut key: Shoots donuts… What did you expect?
- Weather key: Creates all sorts of weathers, even sentient storm clouds. It can also shoot a freeze ray which froze the entirety of Victoria Falls.
- Doremi key: Supposedly changes the vocal cords of whoever is hit. (Not seen)
- Body Switch key: Switches the bodies of the two closest people once hit.
- Color key: Capable of taking and giving colors to different objects. Its effects can be undone by turning its handle.
- Marshmallow key: Shoots out marshmallows. (Given away)
- Strength key: Boosts the strength of whoever it’s used on. The effects can be undone by blasting an affected person.
- Rubber Ducky key: Floats on water and supposedly shoots rubber duckies. (Not seen)
- Greek Myth key: Can make illustrations of Greek myths come to the real world. The creatures can be undone by turning its handle and blasting the creatures.
- Crystal Glass key: Turns its target to glass. It can be undone by unknown means. (Returned)
- Boomerang key: When thrown, will fetch what you ask for. (Returned)
- Talk To Animals key: Allows any blasted animal to speak. Also gives them human intellect. (Returned)
- Mega-Mega Monster key: Turns things into giant building sized kaijus and toys into actual mechs. Uses of the key can be stacked to make even larger-stronger creatures. Affected characters have made buildings fall down. To reverse its effects, a slide puzzle must be completed on the key.
- Slow-Mo key: Significantly slows down whatever is hit. It has a decently long area of effect once it hits something.
- Bubble key: Shoots bubbles that are capable of trapping objects, living people, and be used to breathe underwater. Its effects can be undone by spinning its handle. (Returned)
- Ice Castle key: Capable of forming ice structures into what the user desires. It can be undone by the key by unknown means.
- Grow key: Can increase and shrink anything it blasts by turning its handle into either variant.
- Gingerbread key: Turns whatever it shoots into a gingerbread version of it. Can be undone by turning its handle and shooting. (Returned)
- Wind Up key: Winds up all wind up toys. (Returned)
- Vacuum keys: Sucks up any material that can be liquified in order to shoot it and create any shape the user wants. When reversed, it returns all material back to normal.
- Tick Tock key: The most powerful key in Wizard Whitebeard’s collection, being capable to go forward and backwards in time only limited by the amount of sand in its hourglass. (Broken)
- Quick Bloom key: Allows any targeted plant to gain consciousness. Effects can be undone by another blast to the plants. (Given away)
- Follow The Leader key: Makes people hit follow the movements of the user of the key. Effects can be undone all at once.
- Riddle key: A living, talking magic key that says riddles that lead to the lost chamber of magic keys. (Lost)
- Bouncy-Bounce key: Makes living beings only be capable of bouncing. Effects can be undone by shooting at the affected beings, which turns out to have a huge area of effect.
- Wind key: Shoots out incredibly strong gusts of wind. (Returned)
- Shadow Puppet key: Makes any living beings’ shadows living, tangible, and three dimensional beings. While the user of the key can mostly direct them, they are naturally really mischievous. All effects can be undone with just a click. (Returned)
- Super-Dooper Snooper key: Can sniff out objects all around the world with only a trace of them. (Returned)
- Key in the Stone: A key located near Stonehenge that is stuck in a large striped rock. If successfully pulled out, a castle will appear with all of King Arthur’s knights, although not himself, and the puller will become their king. Can be undone by putting the key back in the stone. (Returned)
- Become-An-Animal key: Turns whoever is blasted into or back from a conscious animal.
- Grow-Up key: Despite it’s name, it can change the age of whoever is blasted into whatever the user wants whether forwards or backwards
- Dino key: Turns any dinosaur fossil back into a living dinosaur. Even just a singular bone is able to turn into a dinosaur. Magic can be reversed by tilting its handle. (Returned)
- Furball key: Covers the target in very itchy fur.
- Haunted House key: Turns Halloween decorations into the living representation of their character. All effects can be undone by tilting its handle.
- Invisibility key: Makes things invisible. Before you ask, the key is invisible too. Effects can be undone by shooting at invisible objects.
- Guitar key: A guitar sized key that can move the positions of the sun and blue moon by playing it. (Returned)
- Fairytale key: Brings fairytale characters to life if their book is blasted. Effects can be undone by blasting the fairytale characters.
- Firefly key: Makes whatever is hit glow.
- Lollipop key: Shoots lollipops.

- Magnet key: Attracts metals with a slider that changes its potency.
- Gigantic Meatball key: Supposedly fires giant meatballs
- Wake-A-Troll key: Wakes up Iceland’s sleeping troll mountains. Effects can be undone by shooting the trolls again.
- Pie-In-The-Face key: Throws pies… no really, what else did you expect? (Returned)
- Giggle key: Makes floating giggling mouths. (Returned)
- Banana Peel key: Creates a pile of banana peels. (Returned)
- Salt and Pepper key: Creates a small cloud of salt and pepper (Returned)
- Pogo Stick key: Grows in size to be used as a pogo stick. (Returned)
- Present key: Wraps anything like a present. (Returned)
- Water Balloon key: Throws water balloons. (Returned)
- Popcorn key: You should already know. (Returned)
- Whip Cream key: Guess? (Returned)
- Burping key: Burps. (Returned)
- Bubble key: Another bubble key? This one only shoots bouncy colored bubbles. (Returned)
- Cha-Cha key: Makes targets dance perfectly. (Returned)
- Bubblegum key: Shoots out sticky bubble gum. (Returned)
- Trampoline key: Creates a trampoline. (Returned)
- Butterscotch key: Shoots out butterscotch. (Returned)

- Staple key: Staples… things… together. (Returned)
- Flippety key: Makes whoever is hit into a stellar gymnast. All effects can be undone by tilting its handle.
While Waldo doesn’t necessarily have all of these keys at hand, he does know where they all are (most being in the Magic Key vault) and possesses more than enough methods of getting his hands on them if needed.
Traveling Equipment
Composed of a kettle, mallet, cup, backpack, sleeping bag, binoculars, camera, snorkel, belt, bag, shovel, and everything else needed for survival, this is equipment Waldo takes to journeys in the wild.
Jetpack
For whenever Waldo feels like traveling the cosmos.
Lollipops
Found inside chests, Waldo and his Watchers can consume lollipops sweet enough to restore a health point:
Miscellaneous Items
Waldo for no reason in particular carries completely random items at hand that he always, always finds a use for in his adventures, whether it’s by using them directly or indirectly to using them for his contraptions. There are simply too many to mention individually, so here’s a list of all of them.

Vehicles
Flying Carpet
Bought by Waldo from the Land of the Carpet Flyers. Too bad they’re susceptible to very very hungry moths.
Flying Couch
They also sell couches for the record. Fast ones at that being able to outspeed the swiftest of carpets.
Rev’N Go Racing Car
A racing car in the possession of Waldo. Quite valuable for collectors.
Sega Branded Racing Car
Since Waldo’s such great pals with the blue blue himself, he got himself a Sega branded racing car.
Biplane
Found inside a museum, Waldo’s used this plane to save the President of the Future World.
Rocket Ship
At the end of his eight journeys, Waldo somehow acquires? Builds? Uhhh well he just gets his hands on a striped rocket ship which works by successfully performing a gambling puzzle.
Go-Hero-Go Toy Mech
By using the magical Mega-Mega Monster key on this piece of Sentai merch, it becomes a building sized mech that is piloted by 3 individuals. It has roller skates and was able to push a fallen skyscraper back on its feet.
Abilities
Hiding
Since it is in fact Waldo’s whole gimmick, you’d expect him to be a master at disappearing, which he is. Waldo is capable of, whether willing or accidentally, suddenly disappearing and blending into huge crowds. While it might not seem that special at a glance, Waldo’s disappearing act has happened when people are directly staring at him and at times when it is physically impossible to do so. And not to mention that whenever he does hide, a bunch of peculiar red-white striped objects and people just so happen to suddenly surround him as well.
Fourth Wall Awareness
Waldo is quite notorious for his ability to interact with the fourth wall, being able to not just hear and talk to, but also see the narrator and audience, albeit everyone in his world seems to be capable of that. In some cases, Waldo can even pull down a screen from nowhere above for the audience to interact in, like retrieving his walking stick. He’s even met his own creator, Martin Handford, on multiple occasions. Other characters such as Odlaw (literally evil Waldo) have even been able to physically hurt the narrator itself from inside the cartoon as well as push TV static from interrupting his transmission. And as stated previously, Waldo can travel to the real world with his walking stick. Waldo will find you.
Magic Spells
Thanks to a spellbook Waldo bought from the land of the grumpy librarians, he’s able to perform magical spells. While he only showcased one spell, a witch he encountered had the same book, meaning Waldo should have access to her demonstrated spells as well, meaning Waldo can:
- Inflict curses.
- Summon a green buff monster.
- Shrink and grow others.
- Cause spontaneous rapid spinning.
Mathematics
Waldo has such a profound knowledge on math, he’s capable of redirecting a giant boulder with a single pebble through a perfectly placed shot at a perfect trajectory. Yes, that is the actual context behind this scene.
Plot Armor
Waldo is a very fortunate individual, and has showcased incredible feats of sheer luck throughout all his adventures, whether it’s a character from nowhere coming to oh so very kindly guide him, narrowly avoid danger while being oblivious to it, or just so casually be in the exact predicted crashing spot for a meteor shower while being cornered by giants.
The narrator has mentioned on several occasions fate (and the cartoon itself) helping out Waldo. Statements like “let’s remember the star of the show never gets hurt” as danger avoids him corroborate the fact that it’s more than just random chance. We’ve seen it disobey conventional logic too, such as the time Odlaw tried to crush Waldo under a chandelier only for the chandelier to impossibly fall on him followed by a car.
Size Alteration
In many books and games, Waldo and his colorful cast of characters have seemingly grown to international sized heights. Of course, this could fairly easily be chalked up to just being simple visual gags, although other characters have been able to interact with the environment in these dimensions.
Immersion
Our tall man is able to move around and break out of cards, films, pictures, televisions, and even a slot machine containing his image once found out by players. This can be theorized to be an ability he learnt from Wizard Whitebeard as he’a demonstrated it many times and Waldo is by all means his apprentice. Most curiously of all is the time Waldo occupied two spaces at once seemingly without needing to immerse himself first.
Time Stop
During searching minigames, after a certain amount of time passes, Waldo mysteriously appears out of thin air in a certain spot while simultaneously the entire stage, people included, completely cease moving.
Consequences to Not Finding Waldo
Supposedly, being unable to find Waldo can cause such severe levels of humiliation and shame in people that they’ll be overcome to perform irrational actions which may result in eating 67 hot dogs consecutively, running off with a beastly creature, or locking themselves inside a tower which eventually fell and crushed them. Finding Waldo is serious business.
Resistances
Time Stop
In the 1991 series, at the middle and end of an episode, Waldo goes missing and must be found in 30 seconds by the viewer, but during this period, everything and everyone freezes in place while Waldo, the narrator, and side characters commentate throughout this whole ordeal. These segments DO occur canonically, and, in the Christmas special, it is revealed to us that the narrator is the one responsible for stopping time, meaning that somehow Waldo is just naturally immune to time stopping.
Acausality (Type 1)
When Waldo went to the Stone Age, he encountered his caveman ancestor, and despite not only interacting with him, but constantly messing around in the past, Waldo was not affected at all. This is consistent with the 2019 Where’s Waldo series, where he saved Christmas by going to the past with no later repercussions, and even took his own place in the past despite it making no logical sense.
Radiation
In the Future World, Waldo was completely unaffected by a solar flare which was affecting all machines in the world. Now, as you may possibly be aware of, solar flares are indeed lethally radioactive.
Outer Space
Waldo has gone to space on several different occasions, and despite it having freezing cold temperatures and no air, Waldo can handle it just fine, despite his inconsistent need for a fishbowl helmet at times.
Support
Waldo
Woof
Hailing from the Land of Woofs (Yes, every main character comes from their own distinct land), Woof is Waldo’s most trusted companion following him in all his many journeys. Woof is able to understand human languages and has what seems to be human like intellect. Woof, as man’s best friend, is very protective about Waldo from any threat; and while certainly cowardly, is willing to stand up against danger and fight back. No but like, really, he actually attacked Odlaw to protect Waldo. Also, he knows how to use magic keys.
The Narrator
Voiced by Jim Cummings (uh oh!), the narrator is, by legal contract, required to follow Waldo along in all their cartoony adventures. While he might be nothing more than a voice narrating current events, the narrator has showcased their fair share of times to aid Waldo. He is able to stop time and somehow make a bunch of people and shenanigans appear all at once, although he primarily focuses on mocking and distracting Waldo’s foes, mainly Odlaw although he has done so against other opposing forces. He’s also been able to directly affect the fourth wall like changing the viewer’s TV transmission or simply screaming so loudly to turn off the Clue Alert™, which was directly stated to not be in the script.
Waldo Watchers (Including YOU)
Wherever Waldo goes, his many admirers follow the way helping him. While in-universe there does exist a huge group of Waldo followers of which many range from regular humans, ghosts, aliens, gorillas, robots, giants, etc; and let’s not forget that YOU yourself at home are a Waldo Watcher that helps Waldo find his items, solve puzzles, guide his way through his surroundings, and move objects with telekinesis from beyond the fourth wall.
Martin Handford
Thats right! Waldo’s own creator works overtime supporting his baby. In the Wally Wo Sagase? puzzle RPG, Martin aids the player through their quest in order to find Waldo, being capable of creating an entirely new magic stick and teleporting the player to the real world after losing all their health points.

Oddities
Where’s the World? (you crushed it)
As seen beforehand, in an arcade game exclusive to the eastern Famicom, a Waldo Watcher is able to both catch and crush the Earth in their hand in a strength testing mini game. We’ll be completely honest with this feat, it is entirely subjective with no clear answer, as the game gives no further context.
On the one hand, this is supposed to be a strength testing mini game where the crushed objects get progressively harder and harder to crush and the Earth quite literally makes a unique and powerful explosion animation once destroyed.
But in the other hand, it could easily be argued that the smaller size of the Earth, lack of context, and this occurring in a singular gag are more than enough to deem it as invalid, inconsistent and potentially an outlier; by all means, the second highest strength feat Where’s Waldo has would be Wizard Longbeard pulling the Rock of Gibraltar, which is City level, in contrast to the Small Star level Earth catch.
Searchers…
Carmen Sandiego
“The red-wearing educational themed characters from the 80s YOU the audience must find across the entire world.”
If you care in any semblance of way about Waldo in versus, you’ll more than likely be aware of Waldo vs Carmen, and honestly, it’s pretty alright. Both characters have a bunch of zany abilities and arsenals. It could be a very stupidly fun experience to watch. And I find the irl parallels funny such as both having cancelled movies and getting an animated reboot where they protect global monuments from villains in the vsame year.
You can have a mech battle, both stealing color (an ability they both share) to make the fight colorless minus for their red clothes to make a visually stunning sight, facing off across various landmarks with their teleportation, having a moment where both disappear into a crowd and the audience needing to find them, and even the fight turning cosmic at the end for no reason whatsoever. I know some people didn’t want Waldo vs Carmen cuz they find Waldo as a pure joke and Carmen to be far more serious (especially with her 2019 series), however, not only is the original Carmen a comically evil hater who schemes against reality and the player, but a hypothetical episode could certainly have the potential to be hilarious with their humor and gags at the absurdity of both characters if done correctly (like Among Us vs Fall Guys!).
As for the debate, I’m honestly unsure who actually wins. Carmen obviously outstats to a comical degree and has 500 different haxxes, but as far as I’m aware, she hasn’t directly countered something like plot abilities, especially with how Waldo’s protected by the script of the cartoon; outside of turning off the player’s computer that is, but I don’t see how that correlates too much; and he himself has some pretty nifty abilities by himself that could throw off Carmen for a loop, particularly his time stopping and messing with the fourth wall. This definitely needs some reexamination.
The Cat In The Hat
“Two wacky seemingly naive goofball characters with literary legacies known for wearing red and white striped clothing who go around the world helping those in need with their companions.”
I came up with this as I was making this blog and it works pretty well. It plays into what makes both so enjoyable while paying homage to their origins as book characters and legacies that came with them.
Dynamic could certainly be fun as they utilize their wacky arsenals to one up each other in a kind manner for comedy. In particular, you could certainly play a lot into their abilities to mess with the fourth wall for a climax, with the loser smiling as they’ve found someone to keep helping others. And the dead would have to be something cartoony like the winner reading their book.
Debate wise however, the Cat horribly stomps 💀. Any ability Waldo has, the Cat either already has or possesses a vastly superior version of, especially with their plot abilities and cognitive immortality. It’s not really a contest, but the match is fun regardless.
The Pink Panther
“Tall, slanky modern men wandering the world to do their jobs but get into wacky hijinks alongside their animal companions.”
An idea I saw thrown around beforehand. It’s fine. I grew up with the Pink Panther so I definitely would want a match for them, and Waldo does a fine good job at that. Though it personally doesn’t have as much oomph or heart as the previous matchups.
I think the Panther should win? I’m unsure on their stats and abilities, but my gut tells me they likely win from what I do vaguely know of them from discussions.
Dora the Explorer
Dude I saw this on r/DeathBattleMatchups and was too funny not to include. Dora prolly has some good stuff but no one’s researching her hundreds of contents. It sort of makes sense but it feels so wrong to have Dora on Death Battle lol.
Closing Thoughts
It’s nice to finally have finished this. Hopefully this’ll make people comprehend that Waldo is very much viable for versus, cuz I know that’s always been an issue people had with me trying to push for matchups; though seeing how much people push for matchups for Barbie does give me hope for the future. Thank you for reading this long in the making project.
This was a really fun character blog. Now I actually want to see Waldo in a fight. I think my preferred is Carmen Sandiego, though Dora is legit a close second.
