Herbert West VS SCP-049 (Re-Animator VS SCP Foundation)

(049 render by u/Zill_o_zany)

“Even in grave all is not lost.”

- Edgar Allen Poe

Doctor Herbert West, the Re-Animator from Miskatonic.

SCP-049, the cure for the Pestilence contained by the Foundation.

Death. It is nothing more than an inevitability for all of us, even those who can prevent death are vulnerable to it. But thanks to their intellect, determination, and sheer madness, these two doctors strived to be able to break the line between life and death. But at what cost might’ve it been? That is the real question. But when their own work are at stake in a life or death scenario, which of these two doctors will fail their task of bringing life? Till death do us part.

Before we start…

The material used for both of these maybe mad men of science is quite simple.

Herbert will exclusively be composited for the sake of debate, and therefore will be getting all his content from his modern interpretation, so all his movies, all the Dynamite licensed comics, including his crossovers with Evil Dead, Vampirella, and Hack/Slash; AND EVEN (what we found of) THE MUSICAL! Although H.P. Lovecraft’s original version of the character will be ignored.

Meanwhile, despite SCP being notoriously difficult to research, 049 isn’t one of them, and will be given his 91 SCP articles (as of June 2nd 2024) on the official SCP website… ignoring the ones that are too jokey of course. Some cross scaling to noteworthy SCP articles will be given. Content outside of articles (such as fan made videos or games) won’t be used for obvious reasons. Note that it is likely that by the time you’re reading this, more articles might’ve come out, making this blog outdated.

For the record, both doctors will be allowed the same number of reanimated zombies they’ll start the fight with against each other. Also, some feat links and calculations were used from SCP-049 and SCP-076’s VSBW pages, so credit to them.

Background

Herbert West

“I gave him life.”

  • Full name: Herbert West.

  • Age: 49 (far higher accounting for other media).

  • Alias: The Re-Animator.

  • Ex-student of Miskatonic.

  • Likes: Experimenting, his Re-Agent, Dan.

  • Dislikes: Death, cats, God.

Herbert West was a genius medical student studying in Switzerland who wanted to eradicate death once and for all, and to do that, he would create a serum capable of bringing the dead back to life, his Re-Agent. And after having overdosed his teacher, Dr Grubber, with the re-agent in order to save him, Herbert was relocated to America and sent to the Miskatonic medical school, where he would meet his partner in crime, Dan Cain.

Herbert was eventually capable of convincing Dan, after having killed and revived his cat, to help him on his invention, their invention. Both would work on trying to use the serum on a human test subject, which went horribly wrong when Dr Carl Hill, after being murdered by Herbert, decided to form an army of re-anima ted slaves, and unintentionally created the massacre at Miskatonic medical school which killed Dan’s fiancée, Megan.

Eight months later, Herbert and Dan were deployed as medics in the Peruvian civil war giving them plenty of dead test subjects to use. But after almost getting killed, they would get rehired back at Miskatonic where Herbert would manipulate Dan back into working with him once again to try and recreate Megan piece by piece. Unfortunately, or fortunately, while the plan succeeded, Dan realized that he should let go of Megan and move on, which culminated in Herbert being crushed in his lab along with his creations and Carl Hill, who had come back for revenge.

Yet somehow, still alive after that, Herbert found himself in jail for years after being caught later on, but fortunately for him, a kid he had scarred years ago, Howard Philips, kept a syringe of his re-agent and grew up to become the doctor for West’s very same prison in order to learn the truth. Unfortunately for Howard, West manipulated him into continuing his research and later took his credentials after, once again, his Re-Animated wrecked havoc in the jail and escaped freely pinning all the blame onto Howard.

From then on, once more a free man, Herbert West would continue experimenting with his re-agent to perfection, and this time, there would be nothing getting in his way from stopping him from overcoming death once and for all.

SCP-049

(049 render by Leidora01)

“Do not be afraid, I am the cure.”

  • SCP entry: #049.

  • Age: Unknown (At least in the 500s).

  • Aliases: The Plague Doctor, the Cure, the Star Surgeon.

  • Not human (most times).

  • Likes: Cures, birds, blue blooded aliens.

  • Dislikes: The Pestilence, medical malpractice, living masks.

Since the first living being was born, there would be a disease for it to get sick with. And there was no other larger infectious outbreak than the historial Black Plague of the XIV century. During this time, man would have to adapt to overcome disease; and from seemingly thin air, someone, or should I say, something, arose to the occasion. From a glance nothing more than another plague doctor, this creature would travel in order to rid the world of “the Pestilence”. How exactly? By reanimating the corpses of any infected human, turning them into, mostly, mindless zombies.

While some tales state it was a being transported from the past in a train ride to the present, others say it was nothing more than a winged circus performer that could bring life to the death, while others say that he originates from an entirely different dimension. While there exist many wildly different backgrounds for this creature, it would eventually choose to get captured by the Foundation, an organization tasked with Securing, Containing, and Protecting any and all unnatural anomalies, and be given the entry as SCP-049.

Under the Foundation’s containment, SCP-049’s anomalous capabilities were tested time and time again, with the results leading to lots of problems for the Foundation. But with enough time, patience, and understanding from both parties, 049 has managed on occasionss use his services for actual medical practices and research to aid the Founsation. Although that’s not the end, as with them, he’d meet other entities, such as the possessive mask, which he has a not so great history with, forming a loving relationship with a blue blooded alien, and even reconcile Leslie, a woman turned mosquito, to meet her lover again.

At the end of day, whichever origin, background or tale you want to use, there are two elements to all stories of SCP-049. He is the cure, and he will get rid of the Pestilence. At. Any. Cost.

Skill and Experience

Herbert West

As a doctor and scientist, West possesses very high chemistry and biological knowledge which he uses to constantly create and improve his Re-Agent test after test since he does in fact love his craft. And despite having no more than unknown gun experience thanks to being a medic in the Peruvian war, he’s a very good marksman being able to aim for headshots and limbs precisely. And not to mention his ability to manipulate others to continue progress in his research, such as with Dan and Howard.

SCP-049

(Don’t mind SCP-049-J)

After over five centuries worth of living, 049 has displayed several key and noteworthy knowledge in both medical and combat capabilities. For one, he’s lived for a bare minimum off over five centuries, and has claimed to have obtained nearly more knowledge on medical practices than the entirety of humanity. With such skills, he’s performed surgery potent enough to revive a mosquito, deal with Anderson robotics, and even consistently contend and work with SCP-035, who’s stated to be capable of convincing anyone of anything eventually, and has known said 035 for centuries. Through his time in containment, he’s also encountered matters dealing with the thaumaturgical, technological, cosmological, Eldritch, nautical, and has even survived in the geometrically distorted realm known as Alagadda. Lastly, he has shown to have Noosphere familiarity, which allows him to surgically modify people’s bodies to comprehend the noosphereic entity SCP-3125 (basically SCP’s Shuma Gorath), and can mentally link with the noosphere to sense the Pestilence.

Arsenal

Herbert West

Re-Agent

The pinnacle of Herbert West’s research. The glowing green serum is capable of giving life to dead cells and has varying effects depending on the “freshness” of the victim’s corpse, which will never rot again after injection. For the Re-Agent to work as intended, it needs to be injected into the Central Nervous System (the spine) of a corpse.

If injected into any part of the body, whether attached or not, that part will gain life. And if overdosed with two or more syringes, will bring life independently to each part of the body and cause them to explode in a brutal fashion. Although it technically doesn’t kill them, just makes them lack the parts or mind to move.

Old Re-Agent

There were many failures before Herbert perfected his serum, as his old re-agents, while giving life to the injected, caused “instantaneous disintegration”, as West puts it, after five minutes.

Reconstituted Re-Agent

When not employing the exact materials for his Re-Agent, Herbert’s serum will cause the victim to mutate into a massive flesh blob in seconds.

Vat of Re-Agent

By mixing his re-agent with biochemical stew and mixing it for months, Herbert has this giant vat of re-agent which is able to regenerate and unrot corpses, similar to a fountain of youth.

Revenant Re-Agent

The key to unlocking the reagent's true potential. By mixing his re-agent with Senex rev B, in theory, Herbert brings back the memories and personality of the previously deceased person, albeit all the violent features are still there, just hidden behind their extreme emotions. An overdose on this re-agent will make the body, as Herbert puts it, “consume itself”, and in a matter of seconds, the victim of the overdose will rapidly decompose.

Deadite Re-Agent

As its name implies, it doesn't give life back to corpses, but turns them into the bloodthirsty demonic zombies known as Deadites… which will exclusively target West. Sucks to suck.

Super Re-Agent

As a combination of the magic and alchemy from the gods of death mixed with Herbert’s scientific knowledge, the Super Re-Agent can be injected into a fleshy gateway and open a portal to Drakulon, the planet where Vampirella originates from and has negative energy radiation which can destroy the Earth with enough time. In theory, it could be used as regular re-agent, albeit it was only tested on Vampirella, an alien whose species gains power from West’s re-agent.

Pistol

Herbert’s most reliable tool for dealing with his failed experiments. Good thing he’s a natural at aiming.

Shovel

One of Herbert’s most used melee weapons, mostly used to smack people on the head and behead them, although sometimes used for its intended purpose of (grave) digging. Fun!

Machete

Quite handy for dealing for those troublesome zombies.

Hacksaw

A saw Herbert pushed through a re-animated’s torso (Golden Chainsaw receiver).

Metal Pipe

Used by Herbert to behead his experiments.

Golf Club

A golf club Herbert uses to strike noggins wide open.

Axe

An axe Herbert stole from some voodoo man and his brainwashed girls.

Misc Weapons

Some weapons Herbert demonstrated to owning in his personal facility:

  • Shotgun.

  • Uzi.

  • Sniper rifle.

  • Revolver.

  • Grenades.

  • Knives.

  • Sword.

Psychotropic Powder

With just a blow into the face of an opponent, Herbert is able to make anyone do his command for the rest of their life while they themselves are conscious. Also he still has that voodoo man in the picture above as a hypnotized slave.

Acid

By mixing chemicals on the spot, Herbert can create acid corrosive enough to affect Deadites.

Heart Attack Chloroform

By covering the facial features of any living being for even just seconds with this chloroform, Herbert is able to make anyone have a heart attack and die instantly. He also carries regular chloroform for knocking out people.

Nanoplasm

The key to unlocking the reagent's true potential… again. The human body loses 3-4 grams of weight at the time of death, and Herbert concluded that this is due to Nano Plasmic Energy that is in every cell of the body, which helps cerebral functions. So by transferring the NPE of a person into this device with electrocution, Herbert is practically able to give re-animated their previous conscious back… including the consciousness of the taken person’s NPE.

Re-Animated

Throughout all of Herbert’s many experiments, he has developed various different types of Re-Animated which vary in strength, intelligence, and capabilities; those being:

  • Human Re-Animated: Once alive again, the re-animated gain incredible strength although lack the same level of rational thought they previously had and become, in most cases, violent monsters.

  • Animal Re-Animated: Mostly composed of cats and dogs, which are capable of tackling full fledged adults.

  • Hybrid Re-Animated: Herbert realized that he could stitch together a bunch of body parts, including ones from different species, and create hybrids.

  • The Valusian: The Valusian was once the fiancée of Herbert’s newest assistant, Susan. The Valusian is a giant muscular re-animated that can grow incredibly strong vines from its body and will follow any of Herbert’s orders.

  • Snapper Hybrids: Seemingly large scorpion hybrids that can bite up to a thousand pounds per square inch. Also people killed by them will remain undecaying eternally.

  • Eye Spiders: A mix between an eye and human insides? Doesn’t matter, Herbert can pull his eye out and attach the eye spider into his own to gain memories from them.

  • Deadite Re-Animated: Originating from the Necronomicon’s power, these re-animated posses abilities unlike the rest, being able to fully talk and leap large distances.

Necronomicon Ex Mortis

On his several crossovers with the Evil Dead franchise, Herbert has always gotten his hands on the book of the death, the Necronomicon Ex Mortis. It is questionably standard. While Herbert could theoretically do every incantation contained inside it, he has only demonstrated summoning Deadites and opening gateways through reality/time, and has little, if outright no actual experience using it.

SCP-049

Bag

(Credit to Ephermal Rift)

While it might seem like your ordinary old medical bag, 049’s bag actually works as a sort of pocket dimension where he stores all his medical tools and findings with no apparent limit to size, being even able to fit himself in it as a hiding spot. The bag, if punctured, will cause a rift in the space time continuum, allowing him to travel to different dimensions.

Journal

(Credit to Mr. ILLUSTRATED)

The journal where 049 supposedly keeps all his notes written in. It’s written in an impossible to decipher language.

Medical Equipment

(Credit to kankan33333)

The equipment which 049 uses commonly to reanimate his victims. It is comprised of:

  • Syringes.

  • Surgical knives.

  • Bonesaws.

  • Hand powered pump and tubes.

Although that’s not all, as 049 also keeps medicines at hand, those being:

Cattle Prod

Given to 049 in exchange for its lighting rod by Doctor. Hamm, it was used to shock the corpse of a bovine back to life after 049’s procedures. Cattle prods’ on average produce 5,000 volts, although numbers vary from location to location.

Bone Cutting Lasers

SCP-049 somehow had access to bone cutting laser technology in 1923… I know it says to not ask him, but what the actual hell? While they’re never elaborated upon, it likely just refers to advanced surgical lasers.

Healing Salve

It does not have cocaine

SCP-049 has a medical salve that’s able to heal wounds in days rather than weeks.

Portable Water-Shower

Inside his bag, 049 carries an entire portable shower with even a pressurized tank he can spray with.

SCP-035’s Acid

SCP-035 is an anomalous comedy-tragedy mask that has a psychic influence on anyone nearby to put it on while the mask oozes acid strong enough to dissolve the foundation’s walls in short time frames. Both entities have had their fair share of encounters, and so, 049 regularly carries his acid for his own personal use when needed. It’s also implied that this acid is the ingredient 049 uses for his cure.

SCP-3866

SCP-3866 were medicine given to 049 by the dado house of fine pharmaceuticals. These pills, when ingested, are able to slow down the heartbeat and cause the victim to enter a hibernation-like state for three millennia.

Plague Doctor Mask

In some variations of 049’s origins, he’s a being that just wears clothing and a mask, and not only is his mask a very exquisite look, it also functions as a way to brainwash people who put it on and had several of these at hand.

Spare Spine

You never know when you’ll need a spare spine.

Sort-of-Universal Translator

Given to him by 6118, the sort-of-universal translator allows 049 to understand alien languages, and seeing as how 049 is able to converse with other Keplerians as well, it also translates his voice to them.

SCP-049-2

(Credit to Idrawstuff7383)

SCP-049-2 instances are deceased beings that were reanimated by 049. 049 himself has had a varied number of them on him at once, seemingly depending on how long he’s free from containment. While they may seem like standard zombies, these reanimated specimens possess a variety of abilities. They’ve been stated to possess multiple limbs, and even function without vital body parts such as their own head while still possessing some sort of senses keen enough to charge down their targets; they even don’t require sleep

Through trial and error testing, 049 was even able to make these creatures immune to the aforementioned 035’s acid. Basic 049-2 incidents also are stated to “suffer no pain” and lack any sense of emotions aside from the urge to eat and kill. Through further testing, 049-2 incidents have shown a sort of fear/weakness to fire, dismemberment, and silver bullets to the head or heart. However, these incidents have actually been shown the capability to develop further beyond mindless killing machines. One 049-2 Incident, Ahmed, was capable of maintaining their intelligence to form thoughts and write, albeit still heavily bound by their emotions. Ahmed also showcased a telepathic and manipulative bond with 049, although this may very well have been his corrupted mind playing tricks on him.

Abilities

Herbert West

Tainted Blood

Herbert West, after shenanigans with the Necronomicon, got his blood tainted by the elder god Yog-Sothoth, responsible for giving him inhuman strength (which others can gain by injecting his blood), immortality, and a healing factor potent enough to be able to re-attach his own head after it’s been separated while conscious, being able to attach new eyes, with some help of his re-agent; and even help him come back from complete body mutilation.

Essence of Godhood

After having revived and been kissed by the lady of death, Mictecacihuatl, Herbert supposedly gained some of her essence allowing him to understand her.

Broadway Force

HERBERT WEST CAN SING! AND DANCE! AND SING MUCH BETTER THAN YOU! Sadly the main musical seems to be lost media with very few footage online.

Resistances / Immunities

Radiation: Despite being directly exposed to the entrance and who knows how much deadly radiation of the gate to Drakulon as seen above, Herbert was completely unaffected without any repercussions.

Madness, Mind(?): So this is gonna be weird to explain, but Herbert died in the Prophecy crossover comic and was brought back to life thanks to Ash Williams injecting him with his reagent. However, he didn’t suffer any of the drawbacks to reanimation, meaning he’s either he’s just built different (based), or it has something to do with his tainted blood.

SCP-049

Physiology

(Credit to Dex V)

SCP-049’s physiology is quite odd, and again, varies from tale to tale. But what we do know about his biology from his different backgrounds are:

Touch

(Credit to SCP Animated)

With just a touch of direct skin contact, 049 is capable of causing all the biological functions of an organism to cease instantaneously. However, his touch cannot work if the manifestation of death in the SCP universe, the Brothers of Death, are gone.

Surgery / Reanimation

(Thank you TheVolgun)

SCP-049, as the titular plague doctor, is such an experienced medical professional that he’s able to naturally perform surgery; so naturally in fact that his body’s muscle memory instinctively performs surgery on itself once it finds itself paralyzed, usually taking an hour or less to do so. Although that’s scratching the surface, as 049’s anatomical knowledge nears more than the entirety of the medical profession and has hands steadier than the finest robotic surgeon ever could.

Although that’s not the end of his expertise. While the exact method is rather vague, 049 has shown the ability to reanimate a body with such precision and speed that he can concoct a small army worth of subjects. While the exact method is unclear, we get the most detail in the original article, where it’s implied 049 used a sort of fluid and another tool to reanimate a body. Given how quickly this method has shown to be, it’s most likely a form of syringes and dosages that give them life (sound familiar?). However, this is simply a theory that we can infer, heck, it may even just be 049 has such supreme medical skills it’s meant to be incomprehensible to the reader.

Pestilence Sensing

(Credit to Glowo)

In the Noosphere, the collective consciousness of every single being, ideas have gravity. When ideas die, or are forgotten, they collapse in on themselves and exert an even stronger gravity. This stronger gravity attracts other dying ideas.

SCP-049 has purposefully made it so that he is the only one who knows what the pestilence is, and has also made it so he barely remembers what it is. He only remembers that this Pestilence exists and that his cure is most effective.

The idea of the Pestilence is now in this perpetual collapsing higher than normal gravity state. While he is forgetting the Pestilence, he will never forget it all the way as long as he pursues his endless quest.

Due to his studies on how the noosphere works, his own perpetually collapsing memory allows him to sense the gravity of other collapsing memories, because in this canon, the loss of ideas and memory is the Pestilence, which can only be prevented by turning living beings into reanimated zombies.

Immortality

(Credit to SunnyClockwork)

The reasoning behind SCP-049’s immortality was supposedly granted by a deal with the Brothers of Death, the personification of death, who have chosen to keep 049 alive. The limits of this immortality have been tested a lot, since 049 is able to fully skin himself, remove and place his eyes back, able to surgically modify his own brain, and take out tools stored inside his abdomen, organs and bones. It is to note that even despite his immortality, he is still susceptible to dying from suffocation.

Rituals

As a part of the Children of the Barrow, SCP-049 has shown knowledge on certain rituals to detect other living beings, although they take a week to be completed.

Resistances / Immunities

(Credit to MarkDuster)

Diseases: As is expected from someone who appears as a plague doctor, 049 has showcased immunity to every disease he’s come across, including SCP-6118-B, a highly infectious and deadly alien virus.

Pain: Has performed surgery on himself and mutilated his own body without any visible reactions.

Mind manipulation: Isn’t susceptible to SCP-035 psychic influence.

Radiation: Was unaffected by Earth’s surface becoming irradiated.

Weaknesses

Herbert West

Herbert West is, to put it lightly, an overly egotistical mad scientist who believes himself to be above everyone, including god, which has led to his downfall countless times. And for as smart as he may be, he sure doesn’t think ahead before re-animating violent, impulsive corpses back to life. And not to mention that without weapons or planning, Herbert can’t really do much up close. Finally, while his regeneration is impressive, there’s no timeframe for some of his higher end regenerations, such as being mutilated.

SCP-049

(Credit to XTitan32YT)

People want to sex him…

In all seriousness, the plague doctor does suffer his fair share of weaknesses. For one, his death touch is a double edge sword, as while it’s most definitely useful, it also hinders the doctor from having any proper combat training and experience even if he’s still able to physically kill people and contend with aliens. While his surgical precision and reanimation is massively impressive, it does ultimately take some time and in some cases, some worthwhile preparation to pull off, especially his self surgery. Despite his stoic personality and massive experience, he’s also susceptible to manipulation from others if it means he can benefit from it, although in these specific cases, they generally need to be pulled off by gods or tricks centered around his obsession of the Pestilence.

Before the verdict…

Crossover Scaling

The Re-Animator franchise has crossed over with a variety of series, but the most prominent of all is with the Evil Dead series, which it has done at various times. And while from a glance it might seem like it should be ignored, the crossover was referenced in the later 2015 comic run of “Reanimator” (without the “-”), and not to forget that Herbert’s magic blood is stated to be caused by the Necronomicon. See for yourself:

It is to note that all of Herbert’s comic books, aside from the ones in the 90’s, have had some relation to other franchises. Which leads to the question of whether Herbert should be given crossover scaling to. And not to mention that Sugarbaby, a character originating from Army of Darkness vs Re-Animator, was outright name dropped in Freddy vs Jason vs Ash:

So then, shouldn’t Herbert scale to characters like Ash Williams and Jason Voorhees? This has a very subjective answer that may vary from person to person, but we have decided to not take into consideration any sorts of crossover scaling not found within Herbert’s media. We know people will disagree with this instance, but this is primarily a Herbert West blog, and for fairness's sake, we decided to not delve into those other’s matters. If you wish to learn more about the stats of those characters, we’d highly advise you check out G1’s Jason vs Michael prediction, G1^2’s Freddy vs Pennywise, H Blogs’ Ash vs Frank, and any other we might’ve missed. Please understand and be civil over this decision.

Future Herbert

This should be easy to explain. Herbert wasn’t given the abilities of his future counterpart since that version explicitly possesses a drastically better and different version of his re-agent, capable of regenerating heads and limbs in seconds. As such, it was deemed not standard, since by all means, current Herbert deviated from his future actions, and wouldn’t have reached this peak anyways.

096 & 682 Scaling

(Credit to u/im-a-random-person-k)

049 has some feats of possibly scaling to SCP-096’s strength and 682’s speed, both of which shouldn’t be taken at face value for a variety of reasons. 096 has a strength feat of moving the sun, which gets to planet level, and 682 has several speed feats of flying throughout the solar system, which would likely get in the massively hypersonic if not be above lightspeed ranges despite lacking calculations.

The problems with actually scaling them to 049 are that there is no reason to assume that those were the same versions of the characters that did those feats, as SCP articles are compiled from different universes canonically. Even then, 682’s stats fluctuate from story to story due to how his adaptation works, so it wouldn’t even be logical to assume he would scale to that certain adaptation. Similarly, 096’s stats increase the longer it takes for him to pursue his target. Plus, it would be an incredibly huge outlier since 049 has no other showings of these sort of stats ever again. We’d like to also point out that getting fully tackled by 096 could be taken as fluttery language and so is arguable whether it should be taken literally. Therefore, it wouldn’t be fair to scale 049 to those two’s high end feats, and doing so would be a heavy outlier for the scale in which 049 operates. However, we still will be covering their lower end and “unadapted” feats as those are far closer to his scale.

While the good doctor hasn’t directly encountered Abel himself, an unadapted 682 has fought him whom too, unadapted, fought 096. Abel has directly:

SCP-096

SCP-096 has fully tackled 049 with full force, meaning he should scale durability wise to his lower end feats, such as:

SCP-682

(Credit to FreshDecimate)

As mentioned beforehand, 096 physically contended and matched an unadapted SCP-682. Also 049 has directly dodged an attack from him.

Masked Lords

(Credit to thaboar & KuukiKyu)

“But what about that time 049 gained the powers of a Masked Lord of Alagadda?”

If you’ve been hanging around the SCP sphere for long enough, you notice a weird trend, where every relevant character has either always secretly been a god, gained the powers of a god, killed a god, or impressed a god by shotgunning a beer. SCP-049 is no exception to this trend.

To cut to the chase, SCP-035, the possessive mask, is secretly a god in a weakened state. 049 killed him in this weakened state, and suddenly had 035’s godly position and responsibilities thrust upon him.

035 was known as the Black Lord of Alagadda, and at the lowest possible estimation, Lords of Alagadda are capable of warping the entirety of Alagadda, an alternate dimension the size of our universe at a bare minimum.

So does this mean 049 has universal reality warping as part of his arsenal? No. This is a textbook temporary power up, and scaling to other Lords of Alagadda won’t be granted for several reasons:

  • He had the position for a couple days at most.

  • He did nothing during that time but read his journal and get existential. Nothing that would imply he had new abilities. It’s possible since he refused the position he didn’t even get any powers.

  • If he had the same powers as a masked lord, then he erases Herbert from existence before Herbert can comprehend the fact he’s in a fight.

(Read Ranger Reject it’s fantastic) (or watch it)

Hi! As you may see, this is my first blog, so if you’ve made it this far, I hope you enjoyed all our months of work up to this point (and thanks). I’ve personally been invested in this match for a long time, and researching both characters to this extent made me adore it even more. It allows you to do a huge zombie fight between both while also having opposite personalities interacting with each other. But enough yapping, between these two mad doctors, who’ll succumb to the very thing they obsessively reject?

Stats

Just like both, stats are interesting to discuss. West has more concrete and set stats, of which all are explosion durability feats to which West would scale to, putting him around the Small Building to Building ranges of power. While in contrast, his speed completely depends on how you interpret his bullet dodging feats, as due to the nature of still comics, they could be argued to be aim dodging rather than tandem moving; in spite of this however, West can still scale to his reanimated, which can move faster than human reactions.

As for our birdman, I’m personally not fully convinced on him fully scaling to our shy guy, as 1. The statement could be flowery language used to elevate the impact behind 096’s hug, and 2. In particular 682’s base stats simply fluctuate so much between articles that I’m not the most sold on him scaling to the unadapted lizard. I personally believe only on him scaling fully to SCP-6118, who has pretty clear superhuman feats like breaking bones a lot, and not to mention his speed of blitzing trained guards. It’s important to note that 049 can handle superior gravities than Earth’s (which yes, we attempted to figure out but not enough context was given throughout all of 6118’s articles). Although I will admit, I’m fine with the scaling chain 049 has to 076, ‘Abel’, who is blatantly and constantly able to catch and dodge bullets since 049 dodged a swing from an unadapted 682.

With that set, I’d personally have West as stronger while 049 as faster, but neither to such a degree that 049 couldn’t harm West or 049 blitzing Herbert.

Arsenal and Abilities

Arsenal wise, Herbert has a very clear and large edge when comparing their offensive arsenals. Herbert possesses several melee weapons like shovels, axes, and even a freaking sword. At best, 049 has his cattle prod, which while useful, isn’t beating Herbert’s longer and variety of tools. And that’s without mentioning the several firearms and grenades Herbert has in comparison to 049’s ZERO ranged options.

While focusing on their more miscellaneous parts of their arsenal, both seem very evenly matched with a lean towards West. Both have acids (although 035’s is stronger), both have ways to travel dimensionally, and both have ways to theoretically end the fight by getting up close to their opponent, such as by West’s heart attack chloroform and 049’s plague doctor masks. Although what ultimately sets Herbert apart is his many reagents, as Herbert could use them to overdose and mutate 049 and 049-2 instances at close range.

On the other side of the spectrum, SCP-049 has West beat by a lot. Herbert’s only real ability is his tainted blood giving him a pretty potent but slow regeneration. However in comparison, 049 possesses a larger array of abilities, and while most aren’t useful for combat, his physiology, immortality and touch all pose as incredible powers that help 049 keep him in the fight and counter some of Herbert’s arsenal. Also, since 049 has shown immunity to 035’s psychic influence, it’s more than likely that he’d resist Herbert’s psychotropic powder.

Reanimated

Due to how important both of their reanimations are to them and this fight, it’d be better to give them an entire section.

For starters, West possesses a larger variety of reanimation than 049, with hybrids, snappers, animals, and most importantly, the Valusian and Deadites. Meanwhile, 049’s best reanimations at best are immune to acid and have multiple limbs. It is to note that unlike the plague doctor, West’s zombies do not obey his orders and aren’t under his control, aside from the Valusian and the hypnotized voodoo man; and in particular, Deadites would be wildcards to summon, as they’d quickly destroy the hordes of zombies and target everyone, including West himself, so unless Herbert found himself in a corner, he wouldn’t rely on summoning Deadites.

With my thoughts, Herbert has very clear better and more varied amounts of reanimations but doesn’t have the same level of control that 049 has over his; although the Valusian does take all orders from West, and due its unique vine abilities, physiology and greater strength over everyone, would be able to take down a lot of 049-2 instances before going down.

Skill and Experience

In smarts, 049 is demolishing West. SCP-049 has been stated to nearly have more anatomical knowledge than nearly the entirety of the medical field, has existed for five centuries in comparison to Herbert’s composite maybe 100 years as a high ball? And not to mention his great amount of experience with manipulative entities like 035 and requires actual gods or be pushed in a bad circumstance to be manipulated, meaning Herbert wouldn’t be able to use his snake tongue to trick or lure 049 into a trap in the middle of the fight against what he thinks is a random guy wearing a plague doctor outfit he knows nothing about

The only category in which West beats 049 with ‘intelligence’ is by having more on-screen direct fights and being a relatively skilled marksman.

Who wins?

So in the end, who do I think wins? While I’d wager that under these circumstances and rules the match is very close, ultimately, I believe the Re-Animator wins. For starters, stats don’t matter much and I have them at relative strengths and speeds with slight leans for one and the other that wouldn’t impact the match much. But what really makes me side with Herbert is his offensive advantage in arsenal and his tainted blood, as 049 simply doesn’t have any counters to West keeping his distance and taking aim at 049. Sure, 049’s immortality, slight speed edge and control over his reanimations would make it hard for Herbert to land any killing blows. But if 049 has to prioritize avoiding Herbert’s firepower, he’ll just be a sitting duck until West eventually lands a paralyzing shot, which 049 has proven to be very susceptible to.

And assuming 049 ever got close to touch West, it’s questionable whether his killing touch would actually kill Herbert. 049’s touch by completely ceasing biological functions in an organism, while Herbert has gotten complexly mutilated with his biological functions seemingly stopping, yet was able to come back to life thanks to his tainted blood. Now imagine 049’s touch, which doesn’t even cause any physical harm to its target. While unproven, Herbert could theoretically either come back to life quickly or even be completely immune to the touch as his constant stream of tainted blood resuscitates his biological functions. While on the contrary, West’s re-animated would be vulnerable to the touch, as the re-agent revitalizes the cells with an injection once, which the touch only has to counter once before reaping their life.

The only ways 049 can win is by using 035’s acid on West (which would be hard during a fight and would need to at least cover his entire head/brain to incapacitate Herbert), make him swallow Dado pills (again, hard to do mid fight), using one of his brainwashing masks (once again, try placing a mask onto a man while fighting him), or trapping him in his bag (something which 049 has never done or ever attempted to; also, West could likely escape using the Necronomicon). While on the other hand, despite 049 immunity to West’s psychotropic powder and using his bag in case West opens a portal with the Necronomicon, he can’t counter in any particular way being mutated or blown up by overdoses of re-agent.

And while sure, West doesn’t have control behind his re-animated, he’s no idiot, and has more than enough experience with them to not get in their way when triggered. And also, the Valusian is a huge advantage West as it has decent range and area control when fighting which would simply be way too hard for 049 to overcome quickly before West lands an impactful shot, whether with a firearm or his serum.

In the end, I believe Herbert West’s immortality, firepower, and ingenious inventions paint a close but clear cut win for the Re-Animator himself.

Spectral0108

Hey howdy hey, y’all, Spectral here. My first time properly in one of these blogs, but it’s for a series I’m very passionate about versus a series that while I’m not a major fan of, I love a lot of the characters, especially our titular plague doctor of the hour. With that out of the way, let us determine which of these not-so-good doctors will be the final one to achieve life through death, shall we?

Stats

Right off the bat, initial statistics are a tad tricky to lock down. For West, he can comfortably get into the small building-building ranges through tanking large explosions and comparing to the Hack/Slash cast netting a 0.319 tons of tnt calc, and having an absolute low end for building range of 0.017 tons of tnt from the van explosion also from Hack/Slash. Even without these feats, him tanking a German Bomb Shell vaporizing his experiments and collapsing his lab should by default net him here. For speed, it’s a bit more vague, with some potential subsonic-supersonic bullet dodging, but if you don’t buy that, you can use his Reanimates blitzing others for subsonic ranges.

As for 049, his stats are a bit more up to how one views him scaling to other SCPs. On his own, he should nab consistent street to wall feats through snapping bones, tearing open a man’s torso, shattering 035 who tanked getting rammed by 682 (only considering the feat itself and not scaling to 682), etc. For speed, he should also be netting baseline subsonic via blitzing other humans. However, with scaling to other SCPs, he can be granted scaling to 0.1 - 1.67 tons of tnt through low end Abel and unadapted 682 scaling, and vague further subsonic-supersonic through low end Abel once again.

So who ultimately takes stats in my eyes? Well, in my opinion, while both are most likely even in speed, in order for 049 to properly have the strength advantage, it would have to revolve around a sorta shaky scaling chain that involves relying on two separate instances in two separate stories, as 049 shattering 035 occurred in an entirely separate story to 035 tanking a bash from 682. That’s not to mention that fully scaling either to 682’s ends is a bit dubious in the first place. Thus, while 049 possesses the superior high end (note end and not ends), West directly scaling to feats directly within stories he’s a part of is far more reliable in my eyes, and said scaling outdoes all but 049’s high end scaling. However, I will give 049 a slight speed edge, as his feats of scaling to bullet timers like Abel are more concrete than West’s potential bullet timing, but to an unknown degree. So overall, while 049 has the better speed showings, Herbert West holds the superior AP and durability to a properly numerical extent.

Power and Abilities/Arsenal

Lumping these two together as both sorta rely a good bit on arsenal for their haxs. In terms of sheer variety, West takes it quite easily, as a majority of 049’s arsenal revolves around medical purposes and not as built for combat. That’s not even accounting for the Necronomicon itself being unpredictable as hell… albeit also as unpredictable to West himself so it’s not a major point.

Let’s start with comparing re-animates. Right off the bat, West’s Re-Animates are far more varied in terms of biology and purpose. However, a point for the 049-2s are that they’re generally more intelligent and also not wanting to specifically target 049 (albeit considering how most reanimates are more animalistic, they’ll still probably end up targeting other 049-2s out of sheer feral instincts). What’s also a (potentially) notable factor is that, if 049’s reanimation technique is truly something on the likes of medical processes beyond the human mind, 049-2s are potentially far easier for 049 to create than West, as opposed to West needing to inject his Reagent into a body. However, despite the process potentially being more tedious, West’s reanimates solidly upscale West himself, meaning that these Reanimates and especially the Deadite reanimates are going to be mowing through the 049-2s. Despite the difference in obedience  though, West’s bodyguard of the Valusian and their far reaching vine attacks are a major threat to any subjects targeting West, and since the Valusian is specifically loyal to West, there’s no worry about it turning on West. So in that sense, it’s a case of 049 having the superior quantity of soldiers, but West having the far superior quality soldiers. However once more, 049’s touch is going to negate said stat advantage of West’s army. So in actuality, both armies are essentially going to be in a constant state of West’s reanimates killing off the 049-2’s while the 049-2’s being easier to create and more cunning overall. Thus, it’s ultimately a battle between West and 049 themselves, which makes things a bit more interesting.

With their lackeys out of the way, now let’s look into their personal wincons and such. Let’s compare their main gimmick and wincons first and foremost: The Death Touch and Reagent Overdose. What’s immediately important to note, is that 049’s Death Touch is practically useless here, as Herbert’s regeneration can stitch up the majority of his body being mangled or his head being removed. Meanwhile, the Death Touch is only seen shutting down organs, meaning that Herbert’s regen is most definitely potent enough to kickstart his organs backup, potentially even in a matter of seconds. Another point against the Death Touch is that it requires 049 to achieve direct contact with West, which is going to be rather difficult considering that West’s even most basic weapons from golf clubs and axes to ranged based weapons like his pistol or shotgun would work wonders at keeping 049 away and chipping away at his durability. On the contrary, while West’s Reagent would also require close quarters, it has the advantage of… actually working. Simply put, 049 has no real way to counter his entire bodily system coming to life and tearing itself apart. He’s a good doctor, sure, but not even surgical mastery is going to help when your own intestines are bursting out of your chest. With that, 049 has to figure out a wincon that isn’t his Death Touch, and with his far inferior up close combat capabilities, that’s going to be an issue. But what exactly are those wincons? Let’s cover both sides in a list while also explaining how one or the other can get around, starting with 049.

049 Wincons/Hebert West’s Counters

  • SCP-3866 Pills to put West in a coma:

    • Requires 049 to force feed them to West, getting into close quarters, countered by range difference.

  • SCP-035 Acid to melt West’s body from regenerating:

    • While West can’t resist the acid bypassing his regeneration, 049 would have to fully encase West’s body in said acid at once, or at least cover his vital sections like his head, once again forces 049 to get close.

  • Plague Doctor Mask Brainwashing West:

    • Would require 049 to willingly remove his mask and West to put it on or 049 to force it onto West. That’s not even considering how this is only possible if you use the articles claiming that 049’s mask isn’t a part of his own face.

  • Bag BFR:

    • While theoretically possible for 049 to BFR West in his bag, he’s never shown to consider the possibility, and even if he did, West’s Super Re-Agent or even The Necronomicon could potentially allow West to escape.

  • Surgically Removing West’s Brain:

    • Given how West’s body can’t move when the head is detached, 049 removing the brain from the head could work. However, it would require 049 to pin down West long enough to perform said surgery, which, while in the midst of a feral zombie battle and your opponent can kill you if you get too close, is far from likely. Not to mention that if West is constrained, his head can simply detach from his body to scurry away to prevent the surgery. Also made difficult via range difference.

Herbert West Wincons/049’s Counters

  • Psychotropic Powder:

    • Given 049’s immunity to 035’s psychic temptations and that the powder relies on voodoo magic, can most likely resist. Plus his mask could prevent from inhaling it.

  • Reconstituted Reagent:

    • Little to no counter to if injected. While 049 might be able to deal with the pain, he can’t actually counter or prevent the mutation effects.

  • Revenant Reagent:

    • Same as above.

  • Heart Attack Chloroform:

    • While potentially dangerous if applied, depending on which version of 049’s biology you use, the mask could potentially prevent it.

  • Necronomicon:

    • Absolutely not one of West’s initial ideas for a wincon, but theoretically can use its magic to say, seal or transmute 049. However, the odds of the book obeying West is slim to none, so is ultimately too unreliable of a wincon.

As you can see, not only does West have the most overall wincons, but also has counters to pretty much all of 049’s wincons. Even the few ineffective wincons West has aren’t his go-to fight enders (aside from maybe the heart attack chloroform?), and unlike 049, his main strategy and bread and butter, his reagents, are something 049 simply has no counter to once injected. Another large difference between the two is how they handle damage. West is capable of passively regenerating from damage done to him due to his Tainted Blood, while 049 simply is unaffected by the pain inflicted, not the damage dealt, and has to rely on surgery to recover from. Ultimately, Herbert West has the far superior arsenal and abilities in this bout of medical massacre.

Tertiary Factors

Before I give my verdict, let’s cover the last few stats in this matchup. In terms of experience and intellect, 049 takes both of these quite handedly. Having lived for several centuries and mastering any and all medical knowledge in the human world grants him quite a massive edge over West. However, West holds just as much of an advantage here in actual combat experience and especially direct confrontation, as his feats of slashing through reanimated behemoths as well as his natural skill with weaponry gives him a damn good edge over the guy who’s used to just touching people and them dying.

Another point for 049 involves his sheer stamina through his godlike pain tolerance making him essentially immune to pain inflicted upon his body. While West is most likely numb to certain pains through his many journeys, it’s not to such a similar extent.

So while more short and to the point, I do ultimately believe SCP-049 has the better intellectual prowess, as the gap between 049’s and West’s general intellect and age compared to the gap between West’s and 049’s combat skill and experience is far larger than the latter. West is far from an imbecile, but his hubris and such will also further get in his way.

Overall

As you can probably tell, I ultimately side with Herbert West; The Re-Animator as the ultimate victor. In simple terms, West’s superior strength, durability, Arsenal, combat intellect, Re-Animates, win conditions, and Jeffrey Combs is what will ultimately do on The Plague Doctor. While 049 may hold the superior general and medicinal intellect as well as superior speed and high end strength, West simply overwhelms 049 where it matters most. There’s only so much one can do when their main gimmick and power is practically useless against the part of the fight that matters most while the opposite is far from true for the other. But who knows? Mayhaps this still isn’t the end for SCP-049. Perhaps The Re-Animator finds a new lackey to further confine the power of death itself, and the future of humanity will hold forever as Herbert West sits upon the throne of gods themselves, having conquered what God had thought to have set in stone…

Your winner is Herbert West.

Santee Sherm

Hey guys, it’s Santee Sherm, the biggest SCP goon in the death battle discord.

Let’s jump right in. I buy 049 scaling to breaking a mask that couldn’t be destroyed by base 682, making him roughly 5 times stronger than Herbert. Speed I believe is negligible, based on their very similar speed scaling. They should be reacting to each other just fine.

In terms of actually killing each other, both would require a couple steps to do it, and they’d have to incapacitate each other first. Here, the plague doctor has the advantage. All he has to do is touch Herbert, which would be easy due to him being 5 times stronger. Meanwhile, 049 resists a lot of Herbert’s arsenal. His guns would take multiple shots to put 049 down, giving the plague doctor time to disarm Herbert. His melee weaponry and acid isn’t gonna close the AP gap. He’s not gonna try to blow powder in the face of someone wearing a mask. Giving him a heart attack with his chloroform is gonna be effective, but only momentarily since plague doctor can keep going without his organs for a time.

The necronomicon could seal him, but 049 could come back by breaking his bag. Herbert needs to kill 049 with his re-agents, but it’s going to be very difficult to pull that off when your opponent is much stronger than you and just needs to touch you.

049 is stronger in a 1v1, and he would likely be able to disarm Herbert, use his death touch to incapacitate him, and operate on Herbert so he can’t come back to life, either by removing all his blood(pretty easy for a doctor of 049’s caliber), or by removing Herberts brain and melting it away with 035’s acid.

However, once we bring both of their zombies into the equation, everything changes. In an initial encounter, Herbert’s first move is gonna be to start blasting, while 049 and his 049-2’s will advance on him. Here, the Valusian is a huge asset to Herbert. The 049-2’s do not scale to 049, but the Valusian is stronger than Herbert. With his vine abilities and superior strength, the Valusian should be able to handle all the 049-2 instances at once. The 049-2 instances wouldn’t get one shot, due to their ability to keep going even if their heads or bodies are mostly destroyed, but the Valusian would be very good at crowd control and wouldn’t be in any danger, allowing him to keep Herbert safe.

This is where 049 is in trouble. With his death touch, he would reasonably be able to one shot either Herbert or the Valusian, but not both. If he targets the Valusian, he’ll get shot by Herbert. And while it’ll take a couple shots, 049 will eventually go down. If he targets Herbert first, he’d probably be able to disarm him similarly to how he disarmed the aliens, and hit him with the death touch. The touch would work initially, but while 049 turns to attend to the Valusian, Herbert’s blood would restart his organs and give Herbert the opportunity to shoot 049 or inject him with his regent. And that’s not including all the other re-animated Herbert has running around.

While 049 would hold more advantages man to man, it’s close enough that the X Factor Herbert’s reanimated provide would be more than enough for Herbert to reliably clutch the win. And while it’s possible 049’s cybernetics and biology could slow down the re-agents, there’s no evidence he could do anything but delay the inevitable once injected.

Ironically, it wasn’t their skills as combatants that determined the win, but their ability to give life, and Herbert reigns supreme in that category. Herbert wins, extreme difficulty.

Conclusion

Herbert West

“Blasphemy? Before what God? A God repulsed by the miserable humanity He created in His own image? I will not be shackled by the failures of your God. The only blasphemy is to wallow in insignificance. I have taken refuse of your God's failures and I have triumphed. There! THERE is my creation!”

Advantages:

  • Superior strength on most ends

  • Has a far more varied number of re-animated…

  • The Valusian is the strongest and most useful  unit out of both’s reanimations

  • Could likely come back to life from 049’s Touch

  • Has a good regeneration…

  • Superior close up weapons and range via firearms

  • More direct experience in combat in both long and close range

  • Direct injections of re-agent would instantly kill 049

  • Necronomicon could provide a few wincons…

  • Jeffery Combs

  • Asexual Icon

Disadvantages:

  • Likely slower

  • Weaker if 049 high end is used

  • … although he lacks control over most his reanimated

  • … however 049’s acid could overcome it

  • …but the Necronomicon is a wildcard and unreliable

  • 049 resists his psychotropic powder

  • His hubris could WILL get the better of him

“Dr. Hamm was sick, and I… I cured him. I am the only one who can do this. My work must continue, there is so much still to learn, so much to do, and others can be saved! Even you, though you do not deserve it, might be saved! I can save them all! I can cast down this plague, once and for all. I can do this! Only me! I… I… I saved… I saved him… Dr. Hamm, I… I cured him… he was sick, I know he was sick, I know he was, and I… you all are sick, but I… I can save you. I can save all of you, because I… I am the cure.”

Advantages:

  • Superior stats if fully scaled to other entities

  • Touch directly negates all direct physical attacks, including from West’s reanimated

  • Despite lacking regeneration, is still very tricky to kill and is completely immune to pain

  • Much more wise, calm and intelligent

  • Could come back from being sent to another dimension by the Necronomicon with the help of his bag

  • Would resist West’s psychotropic powder

  • Herbert’s acid would be ineffective against 049-2 instances

  • TheVolgun

Disadvantages:

  • Death Touch is most likely ineffective against West himself

  • Relies on specific parts of his arsenal to kill/incapacitate West

  • Lacks good offensive and ranged weapons

  • Would die from an injection of re-agent

  • Has a history of being paralyzed by gunshots which would leave him open for an entire hour

  • Shipping (honestly they’re not even bad articles)

In the end, while both ingenious doctors proved to be incredibly bright madmen, the Re-Animator proved to have the better cure to death than the Plague Doctor could have ever hoped to achieve. The birdman might’ve had unpredictable abilities, centuries of experience, and far better control over his reanimations, but in the end, his wings got cut once again with no one to re-animate them, as the winner is Doctor Herbert West.

Final Tally

Herbert West (3) - 27thUltra, Spectral0108, Santee Sherm
